Allie McGlothlen is one of our new teachers this year. She is all about photography and her passion and expertise on the subject. She wants her students to be able to use their time in class to be creative.
“I understand that not all of my students will love photography as much as I do, but I want to share it with as many people as I can because it has been an outlet for myself and I hope it can do the same for some of my students,” explained McGlothlen.
She added, “Photography is an incredible outlet for many things from emotions to creativity. It gathers people together to share a love for something. It is an incredible thing and I wanted to share it with as many people as I can. It is my dream job, and here I am achieving my dreams.”
McGlothlen said that she one of the reasons she became a teacher is that she wants to affect lives in a positive manner. “I think teaching is the best way to do that.”
Even though this is her first year of teaching Ms. McGlothlen hopes to stick with this career, she says she loves being a photographer because and I quote “when I send out photos and the client is speechless because they feel beautiful in the photos. I love the opportunities photography gives me to show each individual person the beauty they hold within that they may have forgotten about.” Ms. McGlothlen wants to use her position as a teacher to inspire her students and create a space for them to express themselves creatively, explore their feelings, and discover the beauty in the world around them. She believes that photography can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and self-expression, and she hopes to share that with her students and empower them to see the world in a new way. She explained that she is very inspired by Vivian Maier. She said “Vivian Maier is my favorite photographer. She was a weird wacky lady, but I think we have a similar eye for photography. She was very secluded and on her own, which I can relate to. I have moved a couple times and now to Las Vegas on my own without knowing anybody, the difference is that Vivian would stay secluded away, while I am trying to not be as secluded and meet new people.” She believes as a young photographer you have to understand the fundamentals and the basics of that thing. Beginning photography is going to focus on the fundamentals so that students can grow and experiment with photography, while using the basics to achieve the effect they are going for. As her favorite quote says. “You don’t take a photo, you make it” – Ansel Adams
