All About the Dress Code

Styles were different when Chaparral first opened in 1973.

The first actual school policies for Dress Codes were developed in the 1960s, when students were banned from wearing black armbands to protest the Vietnam War.  Male students would rebel against the traditional short hair by growing their hair longer and keeping it untidy.  The female students of that time wore mini skirts versus the below the knee skirts and dresses that their mothers wore in school. When Chaparral High School first opened in 1973, fashion was influenced by the hippie look with big hair and non-traditional clothing with colorful patterns. Bell Bottom pants, hiphuggers, earth shoes, clogs, tie dye t-shirts and gypsy dresses were popular. Long hair, big hair, and Afros were also in style.

Now, in 2022, Clark County School District’s dress code policies are like many in school districts around the country.  These policies are designed to increase the safety in a school setting, and create an atmosphere of educational success, and keep things equal for students from all economic households.

Below is the current Dress Code policy from the Clark Country School District website:

A. Require the wearing of shoes with soles.
B. Prohibit wearing crop tops (no skin showing between bottom of shirt/blouse and
top of pants or skirts), strapless, low-cut clothing, clothing with slits, or tops and
outfits that provide minimum coverage.

C. Prohibit wearing clothing with spaghetti straps. All sleeveless shirts must have
straps at least three inches wide and cover the shoulder.

D. Require that all shorts, skirts, and dresses must be at fingertip length. If shorts
are worn, they must be hemmed and without fraying.

E. Prohibit the wearing of headgear on campus except for designated school
approved uniforms or at authorized athletic practices or activities.

F. Prohibit slogans or advertising on clothing which by their controversial or
obscene nature disrupt the educational setting. No spiked or studded clothing.

G. Prohibit wearing of outerwear such as coats, mittens, and scarves upon
entering the classrooms.

H. Describe Standard Student Attire if adopted by the school.

I. Specify information, research, and requirements pertaining to Standard Student
Attire on the school’s Web site throughout the year.

Students not in proper dress may be asked to cover up, pull up, or change the attire before going to class.  For those who do not comply with the rules, the Corral expects non-compliant students to wear a shirt provided by the Discipline Office.  This shirt must be returned to the office at the end of the school day.
