CCSD may have huge plans for this upcoming school year regarding the school’s starting time. The starting time for CCSD high schools has been 7:00 AM all up until now. The state board of education is considering requiring that all public schools start at 8:00 am or later. This is due to their research showing the benefits of young people’s health and wellness being taken into account.
However, this decision has not been finalized, but the state board of education is working on getting the new starting time set in stone for the next 2024-25 school year. Everyone is wondering how it’ll change things, as there are a lot of pros and cons that come with it, such as students having more energy throughout the day, wellness and health being raised, bussing being more efficient, but also most people despise the fact that with a later start time, that means we’d get out later.
High school students, who in most schools currently begin the academic day at 7 a.m., have long complained they are walking or driving to campus in the dark during the winter months. Others contend they’re challenged to study, participate in after-school activities or hold part-time jobs, and be in the classroom by 7 a.m. High school student, Alexis Paminutan, said “Good very good as a high school student I see many benefits as to the time shifting to be one hour later. Kids nowadays stay up really late finishing up assignments for school and they lose hours of sleep because of it. Shifting the time also allows kids to get to school on time and allows them to feel more prepared for the day.”
Most see the school’s start time changing being filled with great benefits for themselves and their peers as students and would be delighted to see the state board finalize the start time officially changing, despite the small downsides that come with it.
